Samsung touts high-speed wireless USB chipset

Samsung has designed an advanced USB chipset that supports high-speed, low-power wireless transfers between mobile and tethered CE devices.
Offered in a two-chip set, the S3C2680/S5M8311 WUSB platform can achieving information transmission rates of 480Mbps (Megabit per second) at an average power consumption of less than 300mW.
According to Samsung spokesperson Yiwan Wong, the chipset will likely make its way in to next-gen high-res cameras, TVs, PCs, tablets, printers, projectors, Blu-ray players, transportable HDDs and mobile handsets.
“Manufactured using 65nm low power logic method expertise, [our] new WUSB chipset is a combination of ...

Apple’s A4 processor takes center stage

Apple has deployed its indigenously designed ARM-based A4 processor in a lot of new devices, including the iPad, iPhone 4 and upgraded iPod touch.
But why? What makes the chip – which is manufactured by Samsung – so appealing to Apple?
Well, Jeff Brown and David Carey of UBM TechInsights told TG Every day that the powerful and popular processor provides the Cupertino-based company with a significant number of cost-related benefits.
“For example, the A4 decreases overall IC cost across all Apple devices. That is why the new iPod touch & Apple TV ...

Probe to plunge into sun’s atmosphere

In a project reminiscent of Prometheus’ theft of fire from the gods, NASA’s planning to dive into the sun and capture some of its atmosphere.
Slated to launch no later than 2018, Solar Probe And will get as close as six million miles to the sun’s surface – far closer than ever before.
“The experiments selected for Solar Probe And are specifically designed to solve six key questions of solar physics – why is the sun’s outer atmosphere a lot hotter than the sun’s visible surface, & what propels the solar ...

Dell vs. HP and 3Par: Did Dell win by losing?

HP definitely paid a immense premium for 3Par to wrest the expertise away from Dell, which received $72M in funds for the privilege.
Even at the preliminary bid cost of $18 a share it would have taken some time for Dell to receive a return on their investment at six times that ($33). So, HP is definitely taking a vastly bigger risk – and by exiting, short term, Dell gets $72M in straight profit (that’s the penalty 3Par pays to get out of the Dell deal)
Rather than paying $941M over what ...

Earth is ‘in the middle of mass extinction’

Macquarie University palaeobiologist Dr John Alroy says it is caused by a range of human behaviours & activities, along with climate change.
& they predicts major changes to the rules of evolution as they currently know them, which could have devastating consequences for future biodiversity.
Alroy studied information from 100,000 fossil collections worldwide, tracking the fate of major groups of marine animals throughout the fossil record, & espeically in the coursework of the Earth’s most large extinction event, 250 million years ago.
They concluded that while we have assumed the rules governing diversity ...

New system predicts solar storms – but ESA says satellites are safe

Researchers have developed a new method of predicting solar storms that they say could help to avoid power and communications blackouts.
The next major solar storms are expected in 2012 and 2013 as part of the sun’s 11-year weather cycle. A 2008 US National Academy of Sciences report estimated that modern reliance on electronics and satellite communications means a major storm could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina.
Up to now, solar weather prediction has been carried out manually, with experts looking at 2D satellite ...
